优顿草/Clinathanus/Sabah Snake

The primary method of Sabah Snake Grass propagation is through stem cuttings.

(The choice of the main branch or thicker stems nearer to the base or root would be more likely to survive. Finer stems that are too tender are less likely to survive.)

Stems cutting into sections, such that each section is around 15cm – 20cm long for bigger pots. Prepare a bottle with a large opening and fill it with water.

Soak the stems inside the prepared bottle for 3 to 5 days.
During this period, replace the water in the bottle daily with fresh water.

(It is also possible to insert the stems directly into the soil. However, the survival rate is lower.)

The stems start to bud with shoots or when roots grows,it the sign that the plant has start developing.
Then, it is time to transfer the stems into pots which you had got ready for planting.
Soil is preferable to use red/burnt soil for growing Sabah Snake Grass as the growth appears to be more vibrant with red/burnt soil.
From my experience with black soil (organic multi-purpose) which retain more moisture,on many occasions,the leave yellow.

High exposure of Ultraviolet ray by putting them under direct sunlight all day shows yellowish leaves too.

Fertilizer / WateringThe use of chemical fertilizers to cultivate Sabah Snake Grass is not recommended as we are cultivation it for consumption.

Using organic fertilizers such as fruit peel, vegetable leaves, used ground coffee, used tea leaves, water from washing rice grains, water from washing fish blood.
Water twice daily – once in the morning and once in the evening if you have the time.
If planting outdoors, you can shield the planting area from above with a black net/mesh cover to prevent direct sun exposure, in order to maintain their leaves greenness.

Sometimes due to very hot weather or heavy rains, brown spots may appear on the leaves.
Black net/mesh cover could shield the plant from the rain water and can reduce the impact, protect the leaves from external damage.

Sabah Snake Grass leaves are very fragile, so watering should not be directly onto the leaves to avoid damage that could produce brown spots on leaves.
In addition, moist the leaves in the evening.

In short, those with brown spots and black spots on the leaves is best not to be consumed.

In addition, another point worth noting, is to pay special attention to the leaves to look out for tiny white worms, if any, that should immediately be removed, to avoid harming its leaves.
